The Texas Rangers are too cool for ERCOT

I’ve been visiting home back in Ohio the past few days. Has anything, say, has anything interesting been happening back in Texas?

This post will incorporate two things Loyal Scaiaholics have become quite familiar with:

1.) I frequently blog about Ohio even though I’ve lived in Texas ten years and Oregon before that.

2.) Mama Scaia showed up with a UHaul after I bought my house with stuff she wanted to unload from her house.

For instance, in addition to the notebooks in that blog I linked to in the last paragraph, she had a box full of additional college papers in my bedroom. I started sifting through the box:

I have no idea how this certificate of appreciation wound up stashed away. In Indiana Public Radio’s defense, my performance was outstanding. Even now, I bet I can recite the legal ID:

You’re listening to WBST, Muncie … WBSB Anderson … WBSW Marion … WBSJ Portland … and WBSH Hagerstown, New Castle [brief pause] The time is 7 o’clock.

Nailed it!

Furthermore, I have no idea why I never filled out my contract with the Cincinnati Reds. It’s time I end my hold-out, though. I finally signed it:

Never mind that Jack McKeon hasn’t been manager in more than 20 years and Denis Menke died last year. And this contract is printed on a silhouette of a stadium that closed in 2002 and was demolished. My loyalty has been sincere. My enthusiasm has been hearty. At least since the Expos left Montreal two years after I got this contract.

I believe they hand these out when they let li’l kids run around the bases after Sunday afternoon games. Li’l kids and punk college students.

Also in that box: this ticket stub from the time some of my punk friends wrangled tickets to a one-night only show by Wayne Newton in Indianapolis.

Floor seats for ten bucks! I’m not sure how we wrangled tickets to an Indiana Republican Party fundraiser, but instead of those emails about matching donations and urgent needs, I think the GOP would have more success by booking Wayne Newton to perform; Tony Bennett for Democrats.

Also in that box was a collection from my days as a Steak ‘n’ Shake Master of the Grill, so if anyone needs a red bow tie, let me know. I may just start wandering into Steak ‘n’ Shakes around the Metroplex, picking up a spatula [or “spat,” if you will] and showin’ those kids how it’s done.

But back to the Cincinnati Reds. Loyal Scaiaholics will recall I’ve declared several organizations, including Larry King, honorary 1994 Montreal Expos. This time, I’d like to declare the 2021 Cincinnati Reds honorary 1993 Expos.

That’s a lot of years. Let me explain:

The 1993 Expos featured current Reds 1st base coach Delino DeShields. Current Reds Bench Coach Freddie Benavides wrapped up his playing career with the Expos.

The Expos fell tragically short in 1993, but all the tools were there. Perhaps this year’s Reds can avenge the 1993 Expos.

The 1993 Expos were tragic underdogs. You know who isn’t a tragic underdog? ERCOT.

When I landed at DFW just now, the TV above the baggage claim advertised the Texas Rangers playing in a comfortable 72 degrees with the new dome.

We should rat out Jon Daniels to ERCOT and march on his office for causing these rolling blackouts.
