“Life is tough right now … put on your ZZ Top music”

Over the past week, as the greatest radio reporter in Texas, I have worked to cram as many ZZTop allusions as possible into my work.

You can bid on more than a thousand items that belonged to Dusty Hill this weekend at an auction in Dallas [I even crammed a reference into the headline].

I discussed this with Julien’s Auctions’ Martin Nolan. He explains ZZ Top was one of the first groups to embrace the spectacle of a concert.

Some of the items have already sold for more than the estimate. I gently encouraged an associate who is a musician to bid on the fur guitar from “Legs.” He’s got a wife and two young children, but with an estimate of just $80,000, I couldn’t imagine how he could afford not to bid on it.

The guitar actually sold for $317,500.

I’m learning ZZ Top and I share some similarities. For instance, Dusty Hill and I both have impressive portraits of ourselves.

But we can always improve. His is ten feet tall.

I’m also an Elvis fan, and Nolan talked about how the auction highlights how Elvis influenced ZZ Top.

I’m having some work done on the Ol’ Scaia Place right now, and you know what would add a subtle accent to the decor? A giant bull!

I feel like the bull sculpture [or the horse] would be an excellent conversation starter. Nolan says they’d look great right by the front door as you greet your guests.

“No one get drunk and try to ride the bull,” I would explain. “But at the same time, let’s enjoy a drink out of these commemorative cups from their Schlitz Rocks America tour.”

Nolan provides a sound takeaway from this auction. Maybe you don’t need Dusty Hill’s hat, but it’s a hat that made him comfortable when he performed.

And we all need comfort just now. Nolan explains ZZ Top can take us back to a simpler time.

So I might make a run at his bald eagle jacket. That’ll be great for entertaining when I put the bull on display.
