The XFL is going to give it another try. It hasn’t worked out before, and Loyal Scaiaholics will recall my tips to improve professional football.

But the XFL recognizes Arlington is a lovely community, so they’re moving here. The mayor was glad to welcome the league.

I moved here 13 years ago. I worked in Arlington at the time, so my first apartment was there, and I remember thinking many of the things the mayor mentioned: Arlington is li’l hamlet that conned the Rangers to moving in so they’d be centrally located between Dallas and Fort Worth.

Instead, I learned the li’l whistlestop is, technically, bigger than Cincinnati. I showed up right before AT&T Stadium opened, and when it did, the mayor at the time explained to me he’d call ESPN during Monday Night Football if they said, “Welcome to Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.”

But Arlington is a land of contrast. Even now, I just finished up setting up an affair at J. Gilligan’s. Downtown still feels small and folksy.

Ross introduced Dwayne Johnson at an event to announce the XFL would set up its hub in Arlington.

The Rock would then explain the mayor was too folksy. An understated delivery is not the preferred use of his phrase.

Johnson then talked about coming out onto the field at Choctaw Stadium in the middle of the night to spend some time with the ghosts, even though the stadium is only 28 years old, so the ghosts would be more recent, perhaps hearing the quiet murmur of Game Six.

He said the XFL would give an option to people who weren’t considered NFL material… like himself.

But I feel like he managed okay. Bob Stoops is coaching the Arlington team. He says the team will now start evaluating players ahead of the draft this fall, but he anticipates a mix of players out of college trying to show they’re more valuable and also veterans who want to show they have a few good years left because certain NFL players have struggled ever so much in their later years.

Then we went down onto the field to see if we could find the source of that smell Johnson and Ross kept talking about.
