I recently described two common themes of #ScaiaBlog.
But perhaps a greater theme, according to the #TagsCloud is the 1994 Montreal Expos.
The 1994 Major League Baseball season was a tragedy of sadness. The Montreal Expos were denied their rightful World Series title.
In the above chart from MLB.com, “Z” denotes “Clinched division and best record in league.” From that information, we can deduce “X” denotes “Awful. Just awful.”
I have frequently posited the Atlanta Braves’ claim of 14 consecutive division titles is fraudulent. Who’s got a “Z” next to ’em, Atlanta Braves?! That blog included a picture I feel sums up my position succinctly:
Maybe I’ve been too hard on Atlanta, though. Listen, no one in Texas has a positive memory of any Game Sixes, but this week, we learned maybe, just maybe, the Atlanta Braves had changed.
During this Game Six, the history of Braves’ manager Brian Snitker was discussed, and I learned he, like the Montreal Expos, did not have an easy path.
Oh, and he did toil beneath Ted Turner and Bobby Cox for years. He spent 15 years coaching in the Braves’ system, held down by the Turner/Cox mediocrity machine.
Perhaps he’s turning the organization around. Ted Turner is no longer involved. Snitker has had to grind out seasons, grooming future stars while knowing he’d see them move on to greener pastures. Maybe he understands the plight of the 1994 Expos.
His is a heart-warming story of dogged perseverance. He was finally given an opportunity to turn things around for a city that has suffered so much under previous regimes.
Dare I … dare I declare him an honorary 1994 Montreal Expo?! It’s a list that includes the 2014 Kansas City Royals, the 2020 Dayton Flyers and Larry King.
No. No I do not. Too soon. But the editorial board at 1 Scaianalysis Esplanade thought about it.
Logically, I understand it wasn’t Atlanta’s fault the 1994 World Series was cancelled. Are these thoughts a sign I might be, 27 years after the fact, ready to move on?
The answer to that question, of course, is also no.
