George HW Bush was the first president I met. We’ve discussed this before, when Barbara Bush passed away earlier this year.
I met him and Bill Clinton in Galveston after Hurricane Ike back in aught-eight, when they would do fundraisers. An associate sent me a picture of myself kneeling in front of Bill Clinton on the beach in a very unstately manner.
This week, I’ve had the pleasure of accosting people who had the unmitigated gall to try to leave the family a message at the George W. Bush library in Dallas or the George HW Bush library in College Station.
Some people say, regardless of political affiliation, the Bushes seem like a real family. George HW Bush and Barbara Bush seemed to actually be into each other.
The mayor of Houston, a Democrat, mentioned Bush’ support for the city to host the 2020 Democratic National Convention as a way to show how Bush would work across the aisle. George HW Bush and Barbara were boosters of everything Houston, he says. Barbara would keep scorecards at the Astros game. I’m glad they got to see a World Championship.
In addition to shoving a microphone in people’s faces in Dallas, I took that show on the road to shove a microphone in the face of people outside George HW Bush’ library at Texas A&M.
One woman had an #adorbs story about how she was freakin’ out about which side she should approach the president from to refill his iced tea. And I’m over here, like, “There’s a right side to approach people with iced tea? I’ve been making a real ass of myself.”
And George Bush taught me something.
In conclusion, if this picture doesn’t make you feel ways about things, I’d prefer you stop reading my blog [and I am not ashamed]. I wish to make that dog my executive vice president.
