Today, a co-worker is on vacation, so I had to fill in for her, but I’ll also work late covering the election.
“If we had elected Donald Trump in 2012,” I thought to myself. “He would have outlawed elections and thrown all the reporters in jail by now. That would have saved me so much time.”
People often assume I’m a Democrat because I’m part of the liberal media. Other people often assume I’m a Republican because I work in radio.
When they ask, I say a political party isn’t who I am; I’m an Alan Scaia! Then they look terrified.
As a reporter, I’ve spent actual time with a lot of people who have to run for office, so I get to know them, even if just in passing. When he was pushing to legalize and tax online poker, I remember interviewing Joe Barton. We started talking about poker strategy. Poker being outstanding is a non-partisan issue.
On the Democratic side, when I covered the Dallas Mavericks’ championship parade, I interviewed Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins just before he climbed onto a float with Dirk Nowitzki. Celebrating NBA titles is also a non-partisan issue.
Say what you will about either one of these candidates, this year’s election allowed me the chance to do some work in Ohio. It was hectic, attending a Trump rally in Cincinnati, a Hillary Clinton rally in Columbus and another Trump rally in Akron. I grew up in Ohio, though, and driving all over the state gave me a chance to stop at my mom’s house.
She baked cookies. Primary cookies. She would bake cookies again when I went back for the convention. That time, several co-workers were a couple hours away in Cleveland, so she baked extra. Actually, forget I mentioned that. I don’t think they ever saw any of these cookies.
While I wait for the polls to close, I’ve noticed people posting pictures online of their “I voted” sticker.
I started responding to some of them, but I feel like this is the most efficient way to make this joke:
I can’t believe you’re standing in line today! Early voting is so much easier! Why, I voted more than four years ago!
In conclusion, I waited until today to vote, too, and I voted the straight Alan Scaia ticket.
